A 17-year-old high school senior was killed Thursday after being struck by lightning in a suburban Chicago park -- just three days before she was set to graduate.
Jennie Dizon, of Downers Grove, Ill., was sitting in the grass, writing in her notebook in O'Brien Park near Dunham Road and 68th Street, just a few blocks from her home, after dropping her younger brother and sister off at a dentist's office when it happened.
According to Fox Chicago, around 5:20 p.m., a powerful thunderstorm rolled into the area and a lightning strike hit Dizon.
The teen was found unconscious and was pronounced dead at the scene -- the DuPage County coroner's office confirmed that her death was "consistent with a lightning strike," NBC Chicago reports.
Dizon's sudden death has devastated the teen's family. The Benet Academy senior was described as bubbly, expressive and loving by those who knew her. According to the Chicago Tribune, she was planning to attend the University of Cincinnati in the fall to study theater production.
"Jennie is our angel," Marietta Dizon, Jennie's mother, told the paper. "She has a golden heart. Whoever has met her, she has surely touched your heart. I think God had called her. We just have to place our whole trust in him."
Jennie also played the oboe and bass clarinet and loved music and the arts, according to ABC Chicago.
In a statement released by Benet Academy Friday, "Throughout the day her close friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire school community have had opportunities to recall her many talents, her unique gifts, and her wonderful personality. Through a combination of tears and laughter, we have also shared with one another our recollections of many memorable experiences with Jennie. Most importantly, as people of faith, we have celebrated her entrance into eternal life."
A wake for Jennie Dizon has been scheduled from 3-9 p.m. both Sunday and Monday at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301 75th Street, in Downers Grove. A burial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Scholastica Church, 7800 Janes Ave. in Woodridge.
