Throughout her successful, decades-long career, Jennifer Lopez has suffered her fair share of heartbreak.
In a candid new interview, the American Idol judge gets real about the "biggest disappointment" of her life so far -- the end of her seven-year marriage to Marc Anthony.
"I felt like at that time I had lost my way a little bit, of who I was in trying to make the marriage [work]," Lopez told Jess Cagle, the editorial director of Entertainment Weekly and People. "I had been married twice before and I didn't want this to be a failure ... I just put all my heart and soul into that and forgot who I was as an individual a little bit."
Lopez and Anthony first dated in the 1990s, though the two later split up and married other people. The couple soon reconnected and married in 2004, with Lopez giving birth to twins Max and Emme in 2008. Anthony filed for divorce in 2012 citing "irreconcilable differences."
"I think both Marc and I thought at the time we would be together for the next 40 years until we die," Lopez told Cagle, admitting later on in the interview that she found the divorce empowering.
Today, Lopez is back on with her dancer boyfriend, Casper Smart, while Anthony married his current wife, Shannon De Lima, in 2014. Despite their differences, Lopez and Anthony are committed to co-parenting their two children.
"Marc and I are very good friends, we’re very supportive," Lopez told Arianna Huffington on a 2014 HuffPost Live segment. "I feel it’s my responsibility as a mom when their dad is not there to let them know that their dad loves them very much because that’s the doubt that they have when he’s not around or they haven’t seen him. That’s my job to do that the same way it’s his job when he’s with them to say, 'Mommy is working and she loves you.'"
