When Jenny Beavan won the Costume Design award for "Mad Max: Fury Road" at the Oscars on Sunday, it appeared that a bunch of famous people in the audience, including "The Revenant" Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, chose not to clap for her.
We've since learned, however, that Iñárritu, along with some of the others, did clap for Beavan, just not at the particular moment captured in the night's viral Vine video.
The Huffington Post received the following statement from a rep for Iñárritu, who picked up the award for Best Director at the ceremony.
I think Jenny Beavan is a masterful costume designer and very deserving of the Oscar for "Mad Max: Fury Road." By editing and omitting the full reality and suggesting I felt anything but admiration is mean-spirited and false. What you don’t see in the 10-second clip being circulated is my applause for Jenny as she ascended the stairs to the stage. I’ve learned a lot this awards season … that I should never cross my arms when I am sitting down.
The clapping is also evident in this GIF, captured as Beavan ascended the staircase to the stage:
But whether they did or didn't clap, Beavan couldn't really care less. She was just basking in her glory, as she should have.
"It is so easy to trip, even though I was wearing a sensible pair of boots, I just wanted to take it slowly," Beavan told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Honestly, I didn’t clap the whole time [during the ceremony] -- your hands get tired. We had done a huge amount of clapping by that time. They didn't have to! I don’t mind in the least if they didn't clap," she added. "I felt really good, I felt the warmth, I was so proud of doing the film for George and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought, really."
