Jesse Williams: 'Just Because We're Magic, Does Not Mean We're Not Real'

The actor was presented with a Humanitarian award and delivered an incredibly powerful speech.

Jesse Williams delivered a super woke speech at the BET Awards on Sunday.

The actor and activist was rightfully presented with the Humanitarian award for his work in fighting for equal rights and his relentless support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

During his powerful acceptance speech, the actor spoke truthfully about the terrible treatment of black families and why it's so important to speak up about the systemic racial issues that plague America.

"We know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm and not kill white people every day. So what’s gonna happen is we’re going to have equal rights and justice in our country, or we will restructure their function, and ours," Williams told the audience before going on to further demand respect for all black people.

"The thing is... that just because we're magic does not mean we're not real."

At one point during his speech, Williams gave praise to black women who too often don't receive the recognition they deserve for the responsibilities they carry.

"This is also in particular for the black women... who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves," he said. "We can, and will, do better for you."

Williams also had a poignant message for those who don't have the best interest of black people at heart or do nothing to help work towards the betterment of black folks everywhere.

"The burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander," he said. "That’s not our job, alright? Stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance—for our resistance—then you’d better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest… If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down."
