Photographer Captures Beautiful, Loving Glimpse Into The NICU

The first time Jessica Strom photographed a baby in a hospital NICU, she was a volunteer with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a nonprofit that takes portraits of babies in hospice. Since then, the Kansas City-based photographer has fallen in love with preemie portraits and offers NICU sessions -- for free.

"These babies are so incredibly precious and inspiring, what they have to put up with would make any grown person miserable," she told The Huffington Post in an email. "Documenting that, no matter how scary it feels in the moment, is something the parents tell me they treasure forever."

Strom uploaded a video montage of some of the stunning images to Vimeo (you can watch it above). In the description, she explains that many parents miss out on having newborn photos taken because they're busing making sure their infant is OK. Most of the babies she photographs are between 2 and 4 pounds, Strom told HuffPost.

And in the tragic times that the babies don't make it, Strom says she is blessed to be able to give parents something beautiful to hold onto in memory.

"There is a very special emotion that is always present in the NICU with every baby and every family it's hard to describe in words but I always capture it on film," Strom wrote.
