Jimmy Kimmel Hilariously Mocks Hollywood's Diversity Problem In Emmys Opener

"The only thing Hollywood likes better than diversity is congratulating itself on diversity."

This year’s Emmys have a more diverse set of nominees than ever before, and host Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t help but take a second to acknowledge that.

“Here in Hollywood, the only thing we value more than diversity is congratulating ourselves on how much we value diversity,” the host said Sunday night from the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “The Emmys are so diverse the year, the Oscars are now telling people we’re one of their closest friends. We’re not, by the way.”

While networks have made strides in showcasing a broader range of characters on television, things are far from perfect.

Still, he wanted the crowd to take a moment to savor how far Hollywood has come.

“If you’re a person of color, please, find a white person ― it shouldn’t be hard, I see a bunch of them right here ― just take a moment to reach out and say thanks for your bravery,” he said.
