Sheriff Arpaio has been in office 20 years, mainly by being tough on crime and, more recently, illegal immigration. But the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America is in the middle of the most difficult re-election fight of his career, largely because those themes are being turned against him. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio might want to watch his back -- and his Facebook feed.

Ignacio Carbajal, an Arizona resident, was arrested Tuesday after he posted a statement on Facebook threatening to kill Arpaio, CBS 5 Arizona reported.

Carbajal posted the statement to a page titled "People Against Sheriff Joe Arpaio" and told authorities that Arpaio's "stance on illegal immigration drove him to want to kill the sheriff," according to The Arizona Republic.

Arpaio has aggressively deported undocumented immigrants in the past and has been sued for racial profiling and other civil rights violations. In July, an Arizona inmate plotted to assassinate the sheriff.

The Maricopa Country sheriff has also attracted attention over his position on gun control. After the Newtown tragedy, he deployed a volunteer "posse" of armed guards to protect schools.
