Joe Biden: 'I Had To Ask My Wife Five Times To Marry Me'

Joe Biden Reveals How Wife Took SomeConvincing

Joe Biden joked that his marriage wouldn't have happened if he hadn't proposed to his now-wife Dr. Jill Biden five times.

During his remarks at the International Association of Fire Fighters 51st Convention in Philadelphia on Wednesday, the vice president joked about how "nothing" has happened to him by acclamation, when a motion is passed with no debate. Unfortunately for Biden, that includes his marriage:

"Nothing in my life has ever happened by acclamation. Nothing. As a matter of fact, I had to ask my wife five times to marry me before she said yes. So I don't know about this acclamation stuff."

It's not the first time Biden has made an awkward joke during a speaking engagement. He recently cracked a sex joke while delivering remarks at the National Council of La Raza.

But Biden did discuss more serious issues while speaking to the fire fighters, including the recent theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. He touched on the incident to illustrate the value of first responders.

"They're alive, those 58 people, because of you. You arrived on the scene in a timely way, you got them the immediate help," Biden said.

"Look, I think I know you guys," Biden finished. "We owe you. Every now and then, it's worthy and worth it just to remind people."
