Former MTA chief Joe Lhota won the Republican primary for New York City mayor on Tuesday.

Lhota will face off against the Democratic primary winner, which as of this time has yet to be called, in the city's general election scheduled for November 5.

Lhota had been endorsed by the city's top three newspapers -- The New York TImes, The New York Daily News, and The New York Post -- and was widely expected to emerge victorious on Tuesday.

A former aide under the Rudy Giuliani administration, Lhota is hoping to lure swing voters away from De Blasio's progressive viewpoints, and continue the GOP's longstanding tenure inside City Hall.
