Joey Buttafuoco says he has been inspired to write a memoir of his affair with the Long Island Lolita, Amy Fisher, after surviving an almost fatal illness. But he warns, not everyone is going to be happy with what he has to say, especially police on Long Island.
“My motivation to write the book is the life-threatening illness I had, diverticulitis. I was bleeding black blood like a dumper on a hot day on a New York City Street. The doctor told me I had 48 hours to live. I was writing things down like a knucklehead on a napkin. I cried for three months trying to recover. I was always the strongest guy I ever knew, emotionally and physically but this took me to my knees.”
Buttafuoco became infamous in 1992 after an affair with Amy Fisher. Now, 20 years later, he’s ready to break his silence. Fisher has released two books, "If I Knew Then" and "Amy Fisher: My Story." His ex-wife, Mary Jo, whom Amy shot, released a 2009 memoir titled "Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know." Now, Joey says, it’s his turn.
“I am not carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders anymore. I was always on the defense from day one. Law enforcement put me on the defensive. Attorneys put me on the defense. I have built up so much anger and hostility. I was living my life making bad choices and decisions. The minute I turned it over to a higher power I had relief,” says Joey, whose book is titled "Closure."
"Living with this has been a nightmare. This is my story, what I was told, how the police mishandled the case, criminal defense attorneys coming out of the woodwork to get me to hire them, attorneys just wanted to see their names in the paper. I’m not trying to get people to change their opinion of me, but I want them to have the correct information.”
Joey says he’s willing to take a polygraph on live television to confirm everything he writes in the book is true, but warns people are not going to be happy.
“Police corruption was part of it, payoffs were part of it -- I’m going to reveal all,” says Joey. “I have already received phone calls from certain people back East that are concerned about what I’m going to say. I’m not afraid of bad cops. I’m not hateful at all; I’m a generous guy that gives from my heart. I’m a good guy, not the monster that certain people created.
Joey says the book is set to be released in May 2013.
