John Cornyn: No Hypocrisy In Stimulus Stance

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) maintained on Wednesday that he saw no trace of hypocrisy in his decision to vote against the federal stimulus package and his current bid to use the funds in Texas' favor.

"Myth: No contradiction to vote against reckless stimulus but if maj hellbent to spend the money anyway, make sure Texas gets fair share," he tweeted.

His comments were in reference to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the $787 billion recovery and job creation bill signed into law at this point last year.

Fueling the debate, the Democratic National Committee recently released a web video accusing a number of high-profile Republicans -- including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R- Va.) -- of hypocrisy, underscoring their attempts to take credit for the bill's effects, despite their prior opposition to it.

Cornyn's remarks represent the latest salvo in a broader debate between Democrats and Republicans over the efficacy of the stimulus package and its contribution to the budget deficit.
