Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to apologize for his "President Bob Dole" comment during Thursday's CPAC speech.
Part of Cruz's remarks included lamenting how recent Republican presidential candidates have put their heads down and been "walloped." In the process, he joked that we all "remember President [Bob] Dole, President [John] McCain, President [Mitt] Romney."
In an interview with MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports," McCain said Cruz can say "what he wants about me," but the Bob Dole jab was crossing the line.
"When he throws Bob Dole in there, I wonder if he thinks that Bob Dole stood for principle on that hilltop in Italy when he was so gravely wounded and left part of his body there fighting for our country?" McCain asked.
Back in May 2013, Dole told Fox News Sunday that he was somewhat dismayed by Congress' gridlock, saying that the Republican Party should be "closed for repairs." Dole added that he doubted he would fit in with today's GOP.
"It seems almost unreal that we can't get together on a budget or legislation," he said. "We weren't perfect, by a long shot, but at least we got our work done."
