If you've never heard of civil asset forfeiture, prepare to have your mind boggled -- not blown, necessarily, but aggressively shaken -- by a segment from "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver."
For his top story on Sunday, Oliver delved deep into another issue with which many viewers may be unfamiliar: in this case, a randomly weird thing cops have the right to do, and, apparently, do often. Did you know that if a police officer pulls you over and you happen to have a large amount of cash with you, that officer can just take it if he or she suspects it has been or will be used in a crime? Yep. That's civil forfeiture.
But, wait, there's more. And by more we mean more margarita machines in police precincts.
Oliver does his best to explain exactly what's going on here, and introduces a brand-new spinoff, "Law & Order: Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit," starring Jeff Goldblum.
Watch Goldblum's outtakes, because they're way more entertaining than having your house taken away for no good reason:
"Last Week Tonight" airs Sunday at 11:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
