John Oliver Tells The South Exactly Where It Can Stick The Confederate Flag

John Oliver said there's really only one purpose for the Confederate flag.

“The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that really should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world," Oliver said Sunday on "Last Week Tonight."

After 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston last week, the U.S. and South Carolina flags flew at half staff over the state's Capitol. But the nearby Confederate flag flew high, which led to a growing call that it should be removed.

Several Republican presidential candidates have said the decision to fly the Confederate flag should be left up to individual states. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said the flag represents the Civil War to some, but admits "it has been used in a racist way."

Oliver agreed.

"I believe the first time the Confederate flag was used in a racist way was the exact second they finished sewing the very first one," he said. "It was around that time."
