On the latest edition of "Last Week Tonight," John Oliver continued his mission of educating viewers on a little-understood topic that has enormous impact on our culture. Previous episodes have seen the host take on native advertising, our broken prison system and even Dr. Oz.
This time around, Oliver devoted his lengthy main segment to the "Payday Loan" industry, whose business model he described as a "circle of misery" designed to keep people coming back for ridiculously high-interest loans again and again.
After outlining how the companies take advantage of their customers and how they're nearly impossible to regulate -- "it's like playing legislative Whac-A-Mole ..." -- Oliver enlisted the help of Sarah Silverman to encourage Americans to do "literally anything else" for a loan.
"Last Week Tonight" airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
