John Williams Back For 'Star Wars' Sequels? J.J. Abrams Suggests That Could Happen

Key Figure Returning For 'Star Wars' Sequel

It's hard to imagine "Star Wars" being "Star Wars" without John Williams' iconic score. Which is probably why J.J. Abrams is hoping that Williams, now 81, returns to the franchise for "Star Wars: Episode VII."

"For 'Star Wars,' it’s very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film because he was there long before I was," Abrams said during a press conference in Berlin for his new film, "Star Trek Into Darkness." Those words will certainly make Williams happy. Back in February during a concert, the composer said he was looking forward to another trip to a galaxy far, far away.

"Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I'd have to revisit the themes ... and years later another trilogy," he said. "Now we're hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016, so I need to make sure I'm still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George." Lucas sold the rights to "Star Wars" to Disney in October of 2012, but will consult on the new films despite neither writing or directing the finished product.

For Abrams, working with Williams would be a big change. The director has worked exclusively with composer Michael Giacchino on his feature films ("Mission: Impossible III," "Star Trek," "Super 8" and "Star Trek Into Darkness").

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is out in theaters on May 17. Expect to see the next "Star Wars" in theaters in 2015.
