Johnny Depp stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" for the first time ever today, and thankfully, it was worth the wait. Depp refused to dance with Ellen, saying, "I’d rather swallow a bag of hair.” Obviously, things got off to a smashing start.
But the conversation only got weirder from there when Ellen asked about his famous creations, including Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka. For Depp, inspiration can come from anywhere.
For example, Depp's iconic role, Edward Scissorhands, was inspired by Depp's dog -- and the idea of being a newborn. But where did Depp draw inspiration for his controversial version of Willy Wonka in 2005's maligned "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"?
“Certain ingredients you add to these characters ... Willy Wonka, for example, I imagined what George Bush would be like … incredibly stoned,” he said. ”And thus was born my version of Willy Wonka."
Now it's all beginning to make sense. As for his knack for comedy? Depp replied, "Anywhere that you can find a moment of irreverence or absurdity, I’ll stick it right in there -- sometimes to the dismay of the director and certainly, the studio.”
