Why Pop Star JoJo's New Video Stars A Gender Non-Conforming Person

Her new song is "about embracing what you feel," she said.

True to form, pop singer-songwriter JoJo is thumbing her nose at convention as she gears up to release a new album, “Mad Love,” this fall.

The video for the album’s first single, “F**k Apologies,” includes a gender non-conforming person putting on makeup interspersed with scenes of JoJo performing the song on a city rooftop. (WARNING: contains explicit language)

“I’m not perfect, I got pride/That’s not what it is this time,” she sings. “So f**k apologies/I would say I’m sorry if I really meant it.”

The 25-year-old star, who is currently touring the U.S. and England, told The Huffington Post that she wanted to include a gender non-conforming person among the stars of her video, which features a guest rap by Wiz Khalifa, because the song is “about embracing what you feel [or] do, and who you are.”

“The LGBTQ community still faces persecution today, no matter the strides they’ve made politically and socially in the past decades,” she said. “It was important to me to include representations of individuals expressing how they felt in that particular moment when you just say, ‘F**k it ― this is who I am.’“

Now that’s an unapologetic, no-holds-barred message we can definitely be down for. “Mad Love” will hit retailers Oct. 14.
