The Confederate flag appears to be on its way out, with retailers removing it from stores and governments discussing taking it off official flagpoles.
But as Jon Stewart said on Wednesday night's "Daily Show," there are still a few holdouts who want to keep what he called the "archaic symbol of racist insurrection."
Those who support the flag claim it honors Southern heritage and history, as well as ancestors who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War -- but Stewart poked a huge hole in that argument.
"They fought for the South against the United States because of slavery. That's the heritage you're defending. I'm sure your soldier ancestors had other redeeming qualities, but this is the thing that they're known for," he said. “It’d be like saying you support flying the Nazi flag because you’re proud of their robust anti-smoking agenda. But that wasn’t really their thing.”
So what flag can go up in its place? Stewart suggests something we can all get behind: a pig on fire -- honoring the creation of barbecue.
"That's probably how barbecue was invented," he said. "Ingenious southerners saw a pig on fire and thought, 'I can work with this.'"
