Former Tech Titan Launches Site To Ease Caregiving Toll

Jonathan Schwartz, former Sun Microsystems CEO, announced today the launch of his new internet startup site that works to ease the often-overwhelming issues of caring for an aging family member.

CareZone, Schwartz's company, allows family members and health care workers to share details ranging from updates to patient information. The former tech CEO was inspired to launch the private site after taking on caregiver duties for his parents, who are in their 80s, Businessweek.com reports.

“You find yourself having to care for someone else,” Schwartz, 46, told the news source. “The amount of time I wanted to spend on golf courses talking about server consolidation -- those days are gone.”

Users can purchase monthly or yearly subscriptions to the site, and are in total control of who is allowed to access the information. There is no advertising on the site, which has the layout of a very simple Facebook -- hosting a profile for the person whose care is in conversation, TechCrunch.com reports.

Schwartz told TIME that CareZone's competitors won't be other health care sites -- instead, it might come from other information-storing sites.

Still, a site that combines both is something virtually untapped so far, especially one that focuses on the users' control. John D. Halamka, a doctor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, told Businessweek.com that CareZone could address a fast-growing sector of the health care market because patients want to control their own medical information.
