New Hampshire Rep. Jordan Ulery (R-Hudson) recently sent an email to other state lawmakers with references to stories about how gay marriage could lead to "multiple partners" and "animal interactions," but his argument fell flat when another lawmaker pointed out that the stories he shared were satirical.
Miscellany Blue first reported on the email thread, which originated with a message from Rep. Jan Schmidt (D-Nashua) about gun laws. Ulery's response to the email, which Micellany Blue provided to HuffPost, argued that "a small infringement" like pro-gay marriage laws or gun control laws "always, Always, ALWAYS lead to a greater infringement."
"And when we were discussing same-sex marriage people said talking about multiple partners, animal interactions made those who define marriage as a relationship between man and woman as silly and foolish," Ulery wrote in the email. "Today, however, in several states multiple partners and even bestiality have been proposed or floated as extensions."
Ulery then provided links to several stories about bestiality and polygamy, including a link to The Daily Currant, a satirical news site. Ulery also linked to a blog on Smash Mouth Politics that has a disclaimer from the author calling the post "a parody of what I believe will be happening in a few years."
"Wow, where to start here," Rep. Tim Smith (D-Manchester) wrote back, explaining to Ulery that the stories were satire.
"So ... yes ... talking about multiple partners and bestiality does indeed make folks look foolish," Smith said.
