Who's the doll now?
Jordyn Self knew she was going to get what she wanted for Christmas. She had accidentally discovered the limited-edition American Girl doll in her mom's gift-hiding place. But Jordyn later decided to raffle off the doll to raise money for the troops.
As the "Today" show reported, the 10-year-old Texas girl and her mom, Amy Self, set up a Facebook page for the raffle. They included a Paypal email address for the $1 chances and details about the charitable venture.
The proceeds will provide members of the military with holiday items like paper, snacks, homemade Christmas cards and batteries.
The contest closes Nov. 23 at 11:59 p.m.
The Selfs wrote on the page that Jordyn's school group "Hawks Against Destructive Decisions Inspiring Tomorrow" had adopted a troop to send supplies to, but donations were running low. That's what inspired Jordyn to auction off her Christmas present.
"They don't get stuff that we get everyday," Jordyn explained on "Today."
Amy Self told Fox in Dallas-Forth Worth that she was upset at first when Jordyn found her gift. But her daughter's generous spirit quickly changed her mind: Jordyn first asked her mom to return the $110 doll so they could use the refund money to buy items for soldiers away from home for the holidays; the idea then emerged to raffle the doll to provide even more for soldiers.
"If she has something that somebody needs, she's happy to give it," Jordyn's mom said on "Today."
It turned out to be a win-win for Jordyn anyway. "Today" gave her two American Girl dolls -- one for her and one for her sister.
