Few artists' work captures the spirit of Día de los Muertos like José Guadalupe Posada. Born in the Northern Mexican town of Aguascalientes in 1852, Posada built his four-decade career illustrating crime stories for tabloids and satirizing the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship he disdained. One of the great artists of the Americas, he is perhaps most remembered for his iconic representations of death.
