Jose Reyes, New Marlins Shortstop, Auctions His Hair On eBay

The Miami Marlins' newest infielder Jose Reyes had to cut off his dreadlocks to comply with the ball team's clean-cut policy.

Last Friday, a barber from New York's "Barber Shop of the Major Stars" cut his locks live on the MLB network. Reyes is now auctioning off the dreads on eBay.

The All-Star shortstop, who signed a $106 million, 3-year contract with the Marlins, is not just being greedy.

Proceeds from the eBay auction will benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation of Southern Florida, a nonprofit that fulfills the dreams of sick children.

As of this morning, there were 42 bids to buy the ball player's hair with the winning bid set at $6,112. The auction ends Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m.

But even for diehard baseball fans, what exactly does one do with a bag of cut-off dreads?

Reyes isn't upset about the Marlins' no-hair-below-the-helmet rule. As he told ESPN before the haircut, "It's going to be a little bit emotional because I spent three years with this hair. But at the same time, I understand this rule of my new team. I'm a team player, so I have to cut it off."
