Comic-Con is set to start on Thursday in San Diego, but the website Latino Review got the jump on all things geek on Monday by publishing a big rumor about the next potential Marvel blockbuster.
According to the site, Marvel Studios wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Dr. Strange in an upcoming feature film about the beloved comic book character. Or maybe not: "Not true," said a representative for Gordon-Levitt when contacted by HuffPost Entertainment about the rumor.
In the original Latino Review story, the site noted that Gordon-Levitt might not even be aware of Marvel's interest. It should be pointed out, however, that the studio was previously rumored to have discussed "Guardians of the Galaxy" with the 32-year-old star, so there have been discussions between both parties in the past.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the Dr. Strange comics focus on Stephen Strange, "a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer" who "serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats." (Thanks, Wikipedia.) It's thought that Dr. Strange could become a key part of the third phase of Marvel films (the second phase kicked off with "Iron Man 3" and will go through "Marvel's The Avengers 2.")
"I would love Strange to be a part of that only because he's a great character. He's a great standalone character,” Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige told EW.com earlier this year. "He's got a great origin story, for the most part. And that world of pure magic, we haven't done yet. There's a whole supernatural/magic alternate dimension going on in the Marvel comics that we haven’t ever touched on. So I think that’s exciting."
