Fan Tackles Middlesbrough Defender During FA Cup Replay

The world of English football was a crowded place on Wednesday night, with Fabio Capello resigning from his post as England manager and Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp being found not guilty on tax evasion charges, only to then be tabbed the favorite to inherit the vacant post as England's national-team coach from Capello.

There was so much going on, in fact, that it would've been easy to forget there was actual soccer being played. But that was the case, as there was an FA Cup replay (a "replay" occurs when there is a draw in the first match, meaning the two sides play again to decide who advances) underway in Northern England, where Middlesbrough was hosting Sunderland in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The match was a hard-fought affair, with Sunderland winning, 2-1, courtesy of an extra-time winner by Stephane Sessegnon, but not before a bit of drama unfolded on the pitch. As seen in the video above, during the first half of extra time, a handful of pitch invaders stormed the turf, with one of them either tackling, or losing his balance and sliding into, Middlesbrough defender Justin Hoyte.

Hoyte had been injured earlier on in the match, but was forced to stay on the pitch as Boro had already used its three substitutes for the match. He didn't appear to be further hurt by the invasive fan.

With the win, Sunderland advances to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
