Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" might not drop until Tuesday, but there is already talk of a second volume hitting shelves in just a few months.
Timberlake will reportedly release Vol. 2 of "The 20/20 Experience" in November with 10 more songs, MTV News notes. The news came from Roots drummer Questlove, who performed with Timberlake on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and DJ'ed before his South by Southwest (SXSW) show on Saturday.
Questlove first broke the Timberlake news on an Okayplayer.com message board on Saturday. The Philadelphia native offered up the alleged spoiler in response to a post about the New York Times's critical review of Timberlake's comeback album, according to Billboard.
i will say the album is OVERLY ambitious. like a LOT of ideas crammed into one. spoiler alert. 20/20 Vol 2 comes out in nov. (10 songs now.....10 songs later= 20 vision) i admire the balls it took to make this record. cause he coulda easily urshurd his work in and made diplo his teddy riley to 20/20's dangerous instead of sticking with timb's Quincy. feel me?
Questlove, who said the only portion of "Suit & Tie" he didn't like was Jay-Z's beat switch, also added some insight into Timberlake's creative process. "[J]ustin said he wanted Timb[aland] to 'get back in his real zone' even if it meant alienating the tweens born after 86 who never ever heard of the sly slick and wicked," he wrote. Adding that he "was worried on how he [Timberlake] will cut the prime rib to feed to toothless babies."
Recently, Timberlake revealed he and Jay-Z recorded "a lot of songs together" that Timberlake hopes will find a way to see the light of day.
A second volume might tie up some loose ends for New York Times critic Jon Caramanica, who described "The 20/20 Experience" as an album of "largely inconsequential beauty, showing Mr. Timberlake as an artist with no incentive to innovate, making this primarily a paean to brand maintenance."
With seven of the 10 songs surpassing seven minutes, Caramanica quipped "this could pass for artistry, but really it’s a gesture of conservatism, an argument for the album as a whole over whatever abbreviated singles will eventually be shipped to radio."
A representative for Timberlake could not be immediately reached for comment.
