Karl Lagerfeld is known for many things (his tireless work ethic, those signature sunglasses, having more iPads than he can carry), but being politically correct is not one of them.
The Chanel designer famously dissed overweight women in the past -- "No one wants to see curvy women," he once quipped -- only to then cast plus-size models in shoots and select none other than Beth Ditto to headline his 2009 Fendi party.
Now Karl's back to talking size, telling the Metro today:
"The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
Really, Karl? Was that necessary?
Not really, but when the Kaiser's got an opinion, he voices it. He also threw a few more gems the Metro's way:
Nobody wants Greece to disappear, but they have really disgusting habits -- Italy as well.
If I was a woman in Russia I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly.
People in magazines are 50% bimbo and 50% pregnant women.
I'm a big fan of Mrs. Obama -- and her face, I think, is magical. He would not be there without her. Mrs. Obama is not a fashion statement, but she has other things to do. My favorite thing about Mrs Obama was when she was asked if her skirt was not too tight and she answered "Why you don't like my big black ass?" I want [Barack] Obama to win because there is nothing better anyway, and especially because of her.
Some of these we agree with -- FLOTUS is indeed magical and there are a few too many baby bumps in tabloids these days -- but we can't say we stand by the rest. The Adele comment was particularly unnecessary, considering she's already comfortably situated in fashion's warm embrace, plus-size or not (and may be Vogue's March cover girl).
Given Karl's history of following controversial comments with 180 degree turns, we're calling it right now: Adele will be the next crooner selected to sing at the Chanel runway show.
UPDATE: We've received a brief statement from Kristina Schake, Director of Communications to First Lady Michelle Obama, regarding Karl's FLOTUS quote: "Mrs. Obama never made that statement."
