The opening credits were updated to show her as a featured player along with Vanessa Bayer, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah, and her first sketch had her playing opposite Vergara as Penelope Cruz. In the cold open, she and Nasim Pedrad flanked Jason Sudeikis' Mitt Romney as extras. In the "Watch What Happens Live!" sketch, McKinnon appeared as Bravo star Tabatha Coffey in a fake preview clip fo "Tabatha Takes Over."
But it was in a commercial parody for Pantene Pro-V, where McKinnon carried the bulk of the humor as Cruz, trying hopelessly to pronounce scientific shampoo words through her thick accent. Vergara played the straight man, effortlessly promoting the product with easy words like "hair and "pretty," while Jason Sudeikis directed.
Although the sketch aired just before the end of the show, it was one of the funnier bits of the night. McKinnon is known for her strong character work, so it's fitting that she was able to showcase her impressions right off the bat.
What did you think of her "SNL" first impression?
