Katie Couric Meets Queen Elizabeth II (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

PHOTOS: Katie Couric Meets The Queen Of England

Katie Couric had the moment of a lifetime when she met the Queen of England for the first time on Tuesday.

The ABC News correspondent was presented to Queen Elizabeth II at a garden party for the Diamond Jubilee, which marks the 60th anniversary of the queen's ascension to the throne.

Couric will be hosting ABC News' coverage of the celebration. Her two-hour special, which features interviews with Prince William, Prince Harry and other members of the royal family, airs on May 29.

She recounted her meeting with the queen — who she described as "quite lovely, and charming and gracious" — on "ABC World News" on Tuesday.

"[The queen] was really shmoozing with her guests -- although I don't think she would use the word 'shmoozing' -- but she was chatting with her guests for nearly two hours this afternoon," Couric told Diane Sawyer after leaving Buckingham Palace. "I had no idea what to expect. She looked beautiful."

And yes, Couric did wear a hat!
