While Katie Holmes is desperately trying to live a normal life in New York's Chelsea district after her split from Tom Cruise, her neighbors are complaining that their lives have been turned upside down since she arrived at her luxury rental.
“Yes, we have a lot of wealthy people who live in the building, but we also have a lot of regular working people with children who want to relax after a long day,” a resident told me. “Having to fight your way past aggressive photographers and reporters screaming questions at you is no fun. I wish [Katie] the best, but wish she had moved into a more suitable building. This is not fair.”
StreetEasy.com listed current rental properties in the building as starting at $4,600 for a 900-square-foot one-bedroom.
“The mailman told me he was hiding because the paparazzi were bombarding him with questions,” another resident told me. “It was fun at first but now it’s a massive pain in the ass. We didn’t sign up for this lifestyle that she did. It’s not right. There are so many gated communities just outside the city or private residence[s] uptown.”
But for the other residents of her building, it doesn’t look as though life will return to normal anytime soon. Last Tuesday, the police cordoned off the building's garage after paparazzi followed Holmes inside, disrupting some residents who were trying to leave town for the holiday weekend.
Regardless of whether Holmes stays in the Chelsea residence, one thing's for sure: She is "dead set" on keeping custody of daughter Suri, 6, a source told Us Weekly.
"Katie is not going to compromise on certain issues, all regarding Suri," a source told the magazine last weekend.
