Ken Jeong In Blackface On 'Community' (VIDEO)

WATCH: Ken Jeong In Blackface On Community

If you're going to have a character appear in blackface, you better have a good reason. Or, in the case of last night's episode of "Community," you could really have no reason other than that's exactly what the character would do. Señor Chang is a lunatic, he's playing Dungeons & Dragons, he dresses up like a Drow. No one who knows the show or the character would question that.

As ridiculous, weird and unsettling as it is to see Ken Jeong painted jet black, the moment is earned precisely because it's true to the world of the characters. Chang showing up to play Dungeons & Dragons in blackface is just something that happens. It's played neither larger nor smaller than that. And when all is said and done, it's a minor part of the story.

More importantly, this is one of the funniest episodes of "Community" yet. The show is sure of its voice and its characters and it gives them the room to be who they are, while trusting the audience to go with them. That's what transforms just another sitcom into a classic.

Finally, Abed as the dungeon master is just about the best thing that's ever happened.
