Kenya has been in a state of shock since four al Shabab militants stormed Garissa University in the country's east last Thursday and slaughtered at least 148 people.
The mass killing was the worst the nation has seen since the 1998 bombing of the American embassy and eclipsed the horrific al Shabab attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in 2013.
Aside from marches and vigils, Kenyans have taken to social media to grieve the victims of the attack, most of whom were young students. On Sunday, an online campaign dedicated to ensuring that the world looks beyond the death toll to focus on the individuals behind the number took root. Using social media to spread the message, the hashtag of #147notjustanumber has received over 52,000 mentions, according to The Guardian. The discrepancy between the 147 in the campaign and 148 killed reflecting an updated count of those killed since the campaign was started.
The #147 signs were present at a vigil in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Tuesday night, where hundreds gathered surrounded by crosses and candlelight to mourn the dead.
