Kerry Washington's Fashion Wasn't Always Up To Snuff, The Star Admits

Kerry Washington Once Had To Suck It Up And Ask How To Pronounce 'Hermès'

It's easy to assume that Kerry Washington's spot-on red carpet style is one that came naturally. But the actress isn't too proud to admit that all of that fashion stuff takes work.

The "Scandal" star opens up to Cindi Leive in the October 2013 issue of Glamour, claiming that the days of topping Vanity Fair's best-dressed list were preceded by serious cluelessness. Yes, we're talking before all of those fashionable "Django" premieres and that Miu Miu moment at this year's Oscars. We'll let Kerry take it from here:

"OK, I'm going to admit this: There were a couple of actresses whom I felt were having the upper hand career-wise -- because they knew how to work that red carpet. I was like, 'I'm missing a really important tool. If I am the CEO of the Kerry Washington Corporation, my marketing department is really lax.' So I sort of developed a new character: Red-Carpet Kerry.

And I researched her like any other character. I actually called Tracee Ellis Ross [the actress and Diana Ross' daughter], who's a good friend, and literally asked, 'How do you pronounce Hermès?' Red-Carpet Kerry needed to know."

If you ask us, we'd say Kerry would make a model student -- that learning curve was seriously epic. The newlywed has had quite the year as far as fashion magazines go, snagging covers for Elle and Vanity Fair. For her Glamour cover, Kerry looks positively glowing in a (very un-fall) Dior coral dress. As for the accompanying shoot? Let's just say it cements the actress' position in the style star stratosphere.
