The Flaming Lips have collaborated with Ke$ha, and Lips frontman Wayne Coyne tells to Pitchfork.com it was all Ke$ha's idea.
"On my birthday, January 13, she f***ing texts me and says, 'Hey honey, let's get together,'" Coyne said. "I was like, 'Cool.' She called me that night, and three days later we were recording at a studio in her house in Nashville."
Of course, Ke$ha might have had a few other plans in mind. Coyne revealed a few interesting details from his recording session with Ke$ha, including that one time he and the pop singer almost dropped acid together.
The eccentric frontman said the track they recorded together is about doing acid while the world ends. “It’s exactly what people would think a Kesha/Flaming Lips track would sound like,” Coyne said. “It’s obnoxious and funny … She was really into this idea of doing a song about the year 2012 and doomsday and what’s going to happen."
But there was one problem: Ke$ha had never been on acid before. It looks like the "We R Who We R" singer is somewhat of a method performer because when Coyne came to Ke$ha's house to record the track, she greeted him with an interesting proposition.
"When I got to her house, she said, 'I've never taken acid, so I can't sing about that stuff,'" said Coyne. "She's done lots of other drugs, but not acid. So she was like, 'Why don't we do some acid, and then I can sing about it.' She told her assistant, 'Go get us some acid.'"
So did they do it? Not quite. "Her assistant would've just ran out and got everybody a bunch of acid," he continued. "How great is that? But we didn't, because I was like, 'Listen lady, I'm not going to do a bunch of acid with you tonight, because we have to record.' Plus, I didn't really want her to. The way she is, it's as though she's on acid already. I thought, 'F***, how crazy is that going to be [if she takes acid]?'
The moral of the story? Record first and drop acid later.
The Flaming Lips new album, The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends, will include collaborations with Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Prefuse 73, Tame Impala, Jim James, Nick Cave, Lightning Bolt, Yoko Ono, Neon Indian, Erykah Badu, New Fumes and Coldplay.
And not only did the Flaming Lips collaborate with these various artists, but frontman Coyne also revealed that he's been collecting their blood in his refrigerator. No, not for fun, but to capsulate into a few special edition vinyl records.
Coyne told Pitchfork.com that he's already received blood from pop singer Ke$ha, but he's still waiting on getting some from "Holocene" crooner Bon Iver. "Everybody says yes to this sort of thing, but when it comes down to getting poked with a needle, some people just cannot bear it," Coyne said.
The Flaming Lips new album, The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends, will be released on April 21, Record Store Day.
