Kesha Makes Tearful Plea To Protect LGBT Rights In 2016 Election

“Equality is everything,” she says.

Kesha reiterated her longstanding support for the LGBT community in an emotional new video.

In the clip, which was released as part of Vevo’s “Why I Vote” campaign, the singer-songwriter explains that, for her, “equality is everything” when it comes to the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“In this election especially, I feel like you’re choosing between someone who is promising to build walls and someone who is hopeful,” she says. “And if those are my two options, I definitely wanna go with hope.”

The 29-year-old star, who identifies as bisexual, goes on to explain how she’s “always had a connection to the LGBT community,” and recalls feeling like an outcast while she was growing up in Nashville, Tennessee. Although she stops short of mentioning either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump by name, it’s pretty clear where she stands on the political spectrum.

“I could never imagine punishing someone for loving a member of whatever sex, or someone with whatever skin color,” Kesha says. “Love is love. Period.”

She also uses the video as an opportunity to blast North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2, which effectively bans transgender people from using restrooms and other public facilities that best correspond with their gender identity.

Calling HB2 an “absurd law,” she adds. “Living your truth, whatever that is, and being your self in your skin, in your body, in your sexuality, in your life and feeling safe ― that’s freedom.”

The singer, who is earning rave reviews for her first tour in three years following a well-documented legal battle, has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community for quite some time. In June, she helped two gay fans get engaged onstage during a performance at Walt Disney World’s “Gay Days.” Last year, she officiated the wedding of her makeup artist, Vittorio Mascecchia, and his husband, Felipe Noquiera ― her second time overseeing a same-sex union.

So honored to have you on our side, Kesha!
