A sportswriter who has been jailed for running a prostitution ring claimed that he did so because his pay had been cut at the newspaper he worked for.
Kevin Provencher made the claim in a Massachusetts court on Friday. According to the CHNI News Service, Provencher's lawyer told the judge that he had started the ring as a "side business" after the Manchester Union-Leader--where Provencher worked as a sportswriter for 23 years--reduced his salary.

Provencher plead guilty to running the prostitution ring, which featured women who had sex with him before they were hired. He also plead guilty to intimidating a witness to keep her from testifying against him in court. He was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison.
