The Michigan-born rapper penned an op-ed published by The Guardian on Saturday in which he riffed on a range of issues, from technology ("I don’t FaceTweet or whatever people do") to taxes ("they should legalize and tax everything: pot, cocaine, heroin"). He also broached the subject of same-sex marriage.
"I am definitely a Republican on fiscal issues and the military, but I lean to the middle on social issues," he wrote. "I am no fan of abortion, but it’s not up to a man to tell a woman what to do. As an ordained minister I don’t look forward to marrying gay people, but I’m not opposed to it."
His comments might not come as a surprise to those familiar with the 43-year-old's politics.
Rock, who endorsed Mitt Romney for president and let the GOP candidate use "Born Free" as his campaign song, has voiced similar opinions on same-sex unions in the past.
"It's no secret that I lean right in my politics," he told Billboard in 2012. "I'm supporting Mitt Romney, but as much as I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, let gay people get married if they want… That's not the fucking issue. And I think a woman should have a right to choose if she wants to have an abortion or not -- that's not up to anybody else."
But when it comes to the pejorative use of the word "gay" -- well, we'll let Rock's words speak for themselves.
"Rap-rock was what people wanted at the time, and they still love those songs at shows," he wrote in his Guardian piece. "But it turned into a lot of bullshit and it turned out to be pretty gay… If someone says you can’t say 'gay' like that you tell them to go fuck themselves. You’re not going to get anything politically correct out of me."
