Kids, Animals and Charities -- Who Knew?

We started Friendly Neighborhood Helpers so that kids could have an easy way to help the things they care about most. It's probably not surprising that some of the most popular charities among kids -- organizations that are featured on our website -- are those that assist animals. Here are five such organizations:

1. Days End Horse Rescue
Days End Farm Horse Rescue (Days End) is a volunteer-based animal welfare organization established in 1989 to foster compassion and responsibility for horses through intervention, education, and outreach. Since its beginnings, it's been a place where children and adults have found enrichment, satisfaction, and purpose through providing care for unwanted, abused, or neglected horses.

2. National Education for Assistance Dog Services
NEADS (National Education for Assistance Dog Services), also known as Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, was established in 1976 to train and provide independence to the deaf or physically disabled through the use of canine assistance. These dogs go on to become an extension of their human partners, offering them security, freedom, independence, and relief from social isolation. NEADS has trained all breeds and mixed breeds of dogs, in addition to upwards of 1,300 assistance dog teams from all states.

3. National Disaster Search Dog Foundation
The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) was founded in 1996. Their mission is to strengthen disaster response by recruiting rescued dogs and partnering them with firefighters and other first responders in order to locate people trapped in the wreckage of disasters. They offer professionally trained canines and an ongoing training program at no cost to fire departments. Furthermore, they ensure lifetime care for all of their dogs -- once rescued, they never need to be rescued again.

4. Lange Foundation
Founded in 1993 by Gillian Lange, Lange Foundation is dedicated to saving impounded companion animals and preparing them for a journey to a new, safe, loving world. In addition, they provide spay and neuter funding to pet guardians who are unable to afford such procedures.

5. Pet Adoption Fund
Founded in 1983, Pet Adoption Fund is the largest private no-kill rescue organization in Southern California. Their mission is to rescue, shelter, and find loving, permanent homes for many wonderful, yet previously abandoned, neglected, or abused companion animals -- with special emphasis on senior and physically challenged dogs.

About Friendly Neighborhood Helpers
You can assist these charities and many more like them at our website, Friendly Neighborhood Helpers. At Friendly Neighborhood Helpers, a student (K-12) uploads artwork to the site, where people can purchase it in a variety of mediums (shirts, mugs, stickers, framed art, etc.). All of the proceeds are then divided among the student's school and a charity selected by the student.
