Kids Do the Darndest Things

When I was growing up, my mom had a rule: The only TV we could watch during the school week was the 7 p.m. evening news. She wanted to make sure we spent time studying and doing homework.

Since I loved afternoon cartoons, when I was around 9, I hatched a plan to get my reading done and still watch my cartoons. I decided to memorize my entire reading book! I took the time to practice for weeks until I got it right.

Then, in the afternoons, I would turn on the TV, mute the volume and started reciting my reading book in such a way that it sounded like I was reading aloud! When my brothers saw what I was doing, they jumped on the bandwagon.

If our mom passed by upstairs, she never knew what we were doing because the TV was not in her line of sight.

Years later, I told my mom what we used to do. She said she had no idea.

But, we turned out great. I graduated high school, college and law school with honors and brothers are business owners!

Kids generally live by this simple principle: where there is a will, there is a way! Parents beware.
