'KING ME: Studies In the Uncivilized World' Shows 2 First Ladies Smooching (PHOTOS)

Exhibition On Symbols Of Power Features 2 First Ladies Kissing

WASHINGTON -- A most D.C. exhibition is opening at The Fridge. It's about the symbols of power. One of the works features two former first ladies -- Jacqueline Kennedy and Lady Bird Johnson -- smooching.

"KING ME: Studies in the Uncivilized World" includes 37 pieces by D.C.-area artists. The exhibition includes Hannah Naomi Kim's drawings and paintings about Japanese reactions to North Korean ruler Kim Jong-Il, a a faux documentary by Sean Monohan and Gregory Fong about a terrorist contemplating his divided loyalties and D.C. voting rights hunger striker Adrian Parsons' 3-D printouts of fast food.

Curator Adam Dwight -- who previously curated a show about horror films and feminism -- tells The Huffington Post that he didn't set out to create a show about power. But, getting "behind the eyeballs of every artist I was speaking to," he realized that power was the "common outlook that all of them could celebrate and talk about together within the bounds of their various practices" -- 3-D printouts of fast food; paintings of kissing first ladies; faux documentaries about conflicted terrorists.

"The government climate of the area definitely seeps into the imagination of artists," Dwight said.

"KING ME: Studies in the Uncivilized World" opens with an opening party from 7-11 p.m. on March 3 at The Fridge (516 1/2 8th St. SE, rear alley). The show runs until March 29.
