With less than two months to go before New York City holds its Sept. 10 Democratic primary for mayor, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is leaving that choice in the hands of voters.
In video posted Monday by WMHT-TV, Albany, N.Y.'s PBS' affiliate, Gillibrand was asked if she was endorsing any candidate in particular. She said no, vowing that she did not have a "strong opinion" because she has "so many friends in the race."
There are so many good candidates that would make great mayors," Gillibrand said.
That answer prompted one reporter to ask Gillibrand if she considers former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) to be one of those friends. The senator passed on a direct Weiner answer, turning instead to her relationship with his wife, Huma Abedin.
“Huma is a very good friend of mine, and I think the voters of New York City will have an opportunity to decide who is the best person for that job,” Gillibrand said.
HuffPost Pollster's chart, which includes all publicly available polling, finds Weiner in second place, trailing City Council Speaker Christine Quinn by 4.4 percent. As of June 25, Weiner had closed the gap to less than three percentage points.
But fallout from recent developments in Weiner's sexting scandal may be having an impact. A Quinnipiac poll released Monday found him in fourth place behind New York Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former New York Comptroller Bill Thompson.
