GOP Candidate Kristi Noem Won't Commit To Supporting Boehner For Speaker

Another GOP Candidate Refuses To Endorse John Boehner For Speaker

South Dakota GOP congressional challenger Kristi Noem said Wednesday that she isn't ready to promise her vote to promote Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) to Speaker of the House if Republicans were to take the House in November.

"There could be several people running," Noem told the editorial board of the Argus Leader when asked about who she'd support for Speaker of the House. "I can't say specifically on John Boehner because I don't know what my other options are...If there was another person that was running that represented South Dakota better, and more with South Dakota's industries and interests and values, I certainly would support them too."

Though Boehner is considered to be a heavy favorite for Speaker, depending on the results of the House races, a few Republican candidates have recently bucked the trend of supporting the current minority leader.

Bill Flores, running against Rep. Chet Edwards in Texas's 17th congressional district, repeatedly ducked questions about committing his backing for Boehner in the next Congress.

"I'd rather not answer that question if you don't mind," Flores said at a recent meeting, according to ThinkProgress.

Scott Rigell, a GOP candidate for Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, appeared equally uncertain about Boehner, and even seemed to hint that he'd prefer to vote for fellow Virginian, Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

"I think John Boehner would be a good Speaker," Rigell said at a Tea Party earlier this month. "I think Eric Cantor would be an outstanding Speaker, and there may be some others that come along."

While Noem withheld her Boehner blessing, her opponent, incumbent Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin appeared equally ambivalent in her interview with the Argus Leader about backing Speaker Nancy Pelosi, adding her name to a growing list of unsatisfied Democrats.

"I don't know who will be running," Herseth Sandlin said. "I haven't made any commitments."
