North Carolina authorities recaptured a convicted murderer on Sunday who they say escaped prison with the help of a correctional-officer-turned-lover.

Kristopher McNeil, 29, climbed over a wall at Brown Creek Correctional Institution early Saturday morning, CNN reported. He was serving a 14-year sentence for second-degree murder.

Authorities alerted the public to McNeil's escape. The next evening, locals noticed him walking along a highway in Davidson County.

"Several citizens recognized him from his photo in media reports and called law enforcement," the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

Authorities believe that Brown Creek correctional officer Kendra Lynette Miller, 33, helped McNeil and gave him a cell phone. The two were reportedly lovers who worked together in the prison kitchen.

Miller is being charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive, harboring a fugitive, having sex with an inmate and providing an electronic device to an inmate, according to NBC News.

McNeil now faces charges for his escape.
