Grocery retailer Kroger Co. is in talks to anchor the redevelopment of the old University of Colorado Health Science campus.
Walmart had previously been slated to be the anchoring store, but pulled out after residents in the area organized and strongly protested the move.
During a neighborhood meeting last October announcing that the controversial retail giant was abandoning the project Denver Mayor Michael Hancock told residents that the city "wants a project you can be proud of that creates jobs and reinvigorates the area. The last thing we want is to see this site boarded up for another decade."
While nothing has been finalized yet, something that is being discussed is the possibility of adding one of Kroger's new upscale stores -- Fresh Fare -- that features higher end meats, seafood, cheese and organic food.
“Although negotiations are ongoing, I am excited at the prospect of one of Denver’s best-known and respected retailers stepping forward to work with us in fulfilling our vision for this area,” Mayor Hancock said in a news release.
Thus far, at least on the neighborhood group's Facebook page, Do It Right At 9th, the feedback seems to be positive, but they've yet to issue a statement.
