A news website owned by the Mormon Church is taking a stand against gun violence.
KSL.com, a Utah news website owned by the Mormon Church, announced that it would temporarily suspend the gun listings in its classified section in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting that killed 26 people.
"Like everyone else in the country, the management of KSL is profoundly saddened by the tragedy in Connecticut. In the wake of this and other similar incidents, important questions have been raised about the ease of access to guns," KSL said in a new statement. "Accordingly, KSL has temporarily suspended firearms listings on KSL.com classifieds."
KSL's classified section no longer includes firearms, but does include gun safes, gun racks, gun holsters and gun ammunition. It is one of the largest classified sections online, and it has let people buy guns without background checks, according to a report from the New York City Mayor's office cited by BuzzFeed.
Other businesses have backed away from the gun industry in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, which was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management announced on Tuesday that it plans to sell its stake in Freedom Group, the country's largest commercial gun manufacturer. (Adam Lanza, the Newtown shooter, used a military-style assault weapon made by Bushmaster; Freedom Group owns the Bushmaster brand.)
Dick's Sporting Goods announced on Tuesday that it stopped selling semi-automatic rifles in the wake of the Newtown shooting. Walmart also stopped selling one type of Bushmaster rifle on its website, The Nation reported on Monday.
