Kurtis White, Florida Man, Threw Explosive At Pit Bull: Cops

A Fort Lauderdale man is accused of animal cruelty for allegedly throwing an explosive at a pit bull that he says was drawn to his backyard by his pet dog in heat, according to a police report.

Kurtis White, 22, was implicated in the July 7 incident that happened in his backyard in the 1000 block of Northwest 26th Avenue, police said.

A veterinarian who later treated the pit bull, "White Boy," told his owner that the dog would need a blood transfusion, and had deep cuts, a broken leg and possibly a broken jaw, police said. The pit bull's injuries were so severe, that his owner, Kim Denson, ultimately had it euthanized, police said.

Friday, a day after his arrest, White was released from jail after posting a $2,500 bond, records show. He couldn't be reached for comment despite a phone message left at a listed number.

According to a police report, Denson told police that she saw White harm her dog with an explosive. She said her pet had gotten loose and walked into White's yard, police said.

White said he threw the explosive because he wanted to scare the dog away, police said. White told police that the dog appeared aggressive and began to growl while on his property, the report said.

Although the animal got between White and his own dog, "Patches," also a pit bull, White went inside his home without getting attacked, police said. White and a witness then went to Denson's home to tell her "White Boy" had escaped, the report said.

White returned to his yard and threw an explosive at the dog, police said. When an officer asked White what explosive he had used, White replied it was an artillery shell, police said.

A witness who was in White's yard when the pit bull walked in -- but who wasn't around when the explosive was hurled at the dog -- told police that the animal was known to be aggressive and had bitten neighbors, authorities said.

White paid Denson $300 for the veterinary bills, the report said.
