Kyle Smerer Surprised By Army Father Dressed As Umpire At Mariners-Athletics Game (VIDEO)

Soldier Surprises Son On Field At Mariners Game

Who doesn't love ballpark surprises?

The Seattle Mariners asked 13-year-old Kyle Smerer to participate in the "Steal-a-Base" onfield promotion at Safeco Field -- in which a youngster starts from center field and runs to second base and back (with the base) -- but the team had something even more thrilling in store for him.

When Smerer grabbed the base, he was greeted and stopped by an umpire. Or so Kyle thought.

Kyle stared at the ump for a second until he realized he was no umpire. He was his father. First Sgt. Steven Smerer had surprised his son in epic fashion after returning from a tour in Afghanistan.

"Somebody grabbed me and I was like, 'What are you doing? I'm trying to run back in a little amount of time,'" Kyle said, via MLB.com. "I was really shocked to see him. I didn't know he was going to be here. I'll probably never forget this."

Moments like these are becoming commonplace at the ballpark, as they should.
