El fenómeno de Mónica Puig ha revolucionado a Puerto Rico de un día para otro.
Varios amigos de distintas partes del mundo me escribieron ayer. “Oye, ¿que es eso de #PicaPower?,” me preguntó un español. Otra amiga me escribió, en inglés, “Wow, oro para Puerto Rico. Eso es grande, especialmente ahora con todo lo que ha pasado con la crisis.”
Pues, lo que Mónica Puig ha logrado para Puerto Rico es más que la primera medalla de oro para una isla endeudada y con crisis emocional. Lo que ella ha logrado con su #PicaPower es una nueva etapa para Puerto Rico, caracterizada por unidad de pueblo, optimismo y orgullo patrio. A mi juicio, esto no se veía hace mucho tiempo. Los puertorriqueños ayer, 13 de agosto, estaban unidos como debe ser: puertorriqueños por encima de todo, independientemente de las ideologías. Mónica ha reiniciado una revolución que tanto nos hacía falta.
Mónica, ¡gracias! Ayer dijiste que Puerto Rico necesitaba esto, al igual que tú. Espero que entiendas la magnitud de lo que lograste. El 13 de agosto es tu día en la historia; es el día en que elevaste a los puertorriqueños a darnos cuenta que unidos, con propósito y perseverancia, nos comemos el mundo. Tú hiciste exactamente eso mismo ayer. El momento en que corriste con la bandera está marcado en nuestros corazones. No sabes cuanto nos emocionó verte recibiendo la medalla con tu humildad que tanto te distingue, aún cuando sabías que eras la reina mundial del tenis. El mundo entero está hablando maravillas de ti y de Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico: tenemos que practicar a ser más como Mónica, especialmente nosotros los millenials. Me gustaría pensar que Mónica ejemplifica nuestra generación. Mónica prendió un fuego y nosotros tenemos que prender otro. Está bueno ya de lamentarnos y pensar que porque somos de una isla tenemos que tener mentalidad miope. Todo se trata de cambiar esa mentalidad. Si tenemos unidad de propósito, podemos lograr lo que queramos. Si no lo creen, miren a Mónica, que en sus primeras Olimpiadas logró oro para Puerto Rico.
Tenemos que luchar fuerte por más fines de semana como este. Un fin de semana lleno de unidad familiar y sin asesinatos. El propósito tiene que ser multiplicar las portadas positivas y las razones para estar orgullosos de lo que somos. Este mensaje no es solo para los puertorriqueños en la isla, sino para todo aquel que se considere puertorriqueño ya sea en Estados Unidos o alrededor del mundo. Tampoco se trata de pensar que todos vamos a lograr una medalla de oro en las Olimpiadas. Se trata de dar el máximo, ganemos o perdamos, y de ser perseverantes.
Yo estoy seguro que los puertorriqueños somos especiales y bendecidos. La isla es pequeña, pero qué mucho ruido hacemos. Mónica nos hizo recordar que somos luchadores, grandes seres humanos que quieren cambiar el status-quo. Si pusiéramos esto en términos del tenis: no más doble faltas, no más bolas en la malla. Empecemos a ganar puntos por Puerto Rico. No solo puntos, ¡sino que cada servicio sea un “ace”!
Como me explicó Lulu Puras, prima de Mónica, #PicaPower “viene de que el camino para llegar a sus metas [las de Mónica] siempre va a estar lleno de piedra y obstáculos. Y Mónica lo que hace es picar piedra”. Apliquémoselo a Puerto Rico: el camino de picar piedra es duro, pero se logra con perseverancia.
Lo importante es que por más crisis que haya, nadie nos detiene y el futuro es de oro, como la de Mónica. ¡Qué alguien me diga que no!

Monica Puig is a phenomenon and she revolutionized Puerto Rico overnight.
Several friends from around the world wrote to me yesterday. “Hey, what does #PicaPower stand for?,” a friend from Spain asked. Another friend said, “Wow, gold for Puerto Rico. That’s great, especially now with all that is happening with the crisis.”
Well, what Monica Puig has achieved for Puerto Rico is far more than the first gold medal for an indebted island that currently undergoes an emotional crisis. What she has achieved with her #PicaPower is a new period for Puerto Rico, characterized by unity of people, optimism, and national pride. In my view, this did not happen in a long time. Yesterday, August 13, Puerto Ricans united as they should: putting Puerto Rico above all ideologies. Monica has fueled a revolution we terribly needed.
Monica, thank you! Yesterday you said that Puerto Rico needed this, just like you did. I hope you understand the magnitude of what you accomplished. August 13 is your day in history; it is the day when you elevated Puerto Ricans to realize that together, with purpose and perseverance, we can take over the world. And that is exactly what you did. The moment you ran with our flag is saved in our hearts. You do not know how excited we were to see you receiving the medal with the humility that distinguishes you, even though you knew you had just become the queen of tennis worldwide. The entire world is raving about you and Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico: we have to practice to be more like Monica, especially us, millennials. I like to think that Monica exemplifies our generation. Monica lit a fire and we have to light another. Enough lamenting and thinking that because we are an island we have to have a shortsighted mentality. It is all about changing that mindset. If we have unity of purpose, we can achieve whatever we want. If you do not believe this, look at Monica, who in her first Olympic Games won gold for Puerto Rico.
We have to fight hard for more weekends like this one, a weekend full of family unity and without extreme violence around the island. The purpose must be to multiply positive newspaper covers and reasons to be proud of who we are. This message is not only for Puerto Ricans living on the island, but for anyone who considers themselves Puerto Rican either in the US or around the world. My message is not to suggest that we now all have to win a gold medal at the Olympics. It is about giving our best, win or lose, and about resilience and grit.
I am sure that Puerto Ricans are special and blessed. The island is small, but we make so much noise! Monica helped us remember that we are fighters, great human beings who want to change the status-quo. If we put this in terms of tennis: no more double faults, no more balls that do not get over the net. Let’s start scoring for Puerto Rico. Not only points, but for each service be an ace!
As Monica’s cousin, Lulu Puras, explained to me: #PicaPower comes from the Spanish word “picar,” which means “to cut.” “The path will always be full of stone and obstacles. But what Monica does is cut stones along the way to get where she wants to be,” she said. We should apply this thought to Puerto Rico: cutting stones along the road is hard, but it is achieved with perseverance.
Regardless of our crisis, no one stops us and I am certain that Puerto Rico’s future is golden, just like Monica’s medal. Or someone please tell me the contrary!
