Adults Are Kids, Too: Dinosaurs, Dr. Suess & More

FRIDAY
Fashion On Wheels
What: Get fashionable this Friday with Kate Spade and Brooklyn indie band Vivian Girls's traveling bus tour. The bus is decked out in black-and-white "Japanese floral" print to represent the New York designer's flowery spring line. Check out clothes, shoes, and accessories, including scarves, totes and fedoras, at one of the bus's three LA stops this weekend. On Friday, let the girl group's free concert inspire your spending spree.
When: Friday, Mar. 2, Pop-up shop 11am-8pm, Vivian Girls concert 7pm; Click here for Sat & Sun bus stops
Where: The Grove, 189 The Grove Dr., LA, CA

Dinosaurs & Electric Pop
What: What would make seeing edgy musicians Zola Jesus and EMA for free even edgier? How about watching them play while standing next to stuffed oryxes and rhinos? The Natural History Museum's First Fridays are magical evenings of live up-and-coming bands, nerdy lectures (this week: "The Evolving Universe" and "Why Pluto Had to Die"), KCRW DJ's (Anthony Valadez and Chuck P) and exhibitions open to exploration until 10pm. Geek out!
When: Friday, Mar. 2, 5:30-10pm, tickets at the door
Where: Natural History Museum, 900 Exposition Blvd., LA, CA

SATURDAY
A Whale Of A Time
What: It's peak whale-watching season, so don't miss your chance to see some of nature's most magestic creatures. The Sierra Club Los Angeles 20s & 30s chapter will take a trip, led by an American Cetacean Society specialist, to check out whales, dolphins, sea lions and a range of sea birds. And it's all for a good cause: to raise money for wilderness trips for underserved students.
When: Saturday, Mar. 3, 9:30am-1pm, $30, purchase tickets here
Where: Long Beach SportFishing at Berth 55, 555 Pico Ave., Long Beach, CA

Seussapalooza!
What: It's Dr. Seuss's birthday and Cinefamily is honoring his Whoness by screening vintage 16mm Seuss animations; no remakes (see video below). Right after, the theater will screen the only live-action film the Dr. ever worked on. "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T" features "rollerskate-wearing twins who are joined at the beard, a nefarious piano profs and his blue goons." Come escape from normalcy!
When: Sat, Mar. 3, 1pm Dr. Seuss 16mm animations, 2:30pm "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T"
Where: Silent Movie Theater, 611 North Fairfax Ave., LA, CA

Streets For People
What: Have you noticed the recent green polka-dotted street where the Sunset Junction farmer's market takes place? The Streets For People movement hit NYC and SF first and now LA's getting in on it. Streets for People "inexpensively repurposes underused portions of streets, changing them into vibrant public spaces, and turning streets for cars into streets for people." Living Streets LA, which is leading the effort, need volunteers Friday and Saturday to help fill planters with succulents. The opening of the space, called "Sunset Triangle Plaza," is Sunday. Thanks to blogger Bruce Chan for finding this one!
When: Saturday, Mar. 3, Volunteer 2-6pm (or Fri. 10am-2pm); Sun. opening 11am-2pm, Free
Where: Griffith Park Blvd. & Sunset Blvd., Silverlake, CA

SUNDAY
Operation Gratitude
What: Each year, Operation Gratitude sends 100,000 care packages filled with assorted items and personal letters of appreciation to troops abroad, to their children at home and to Wounded Warriors at transition units. Express your gratitude by joining the care package "prep day" this Sunday. Volunteers 12-years and up are welcome, and minors need a parental consent form. And bring a lunch! Thanks to iVolunteer for the heads up on this great opportunity to give back.
When: Sunday, Mar. 4, 9am-noon, Free
